Stunning Serre Chevalier

Falling snow one day. Blue skies the next. Powder up to your waist. Perfectly bashed pistes. I have just come back from a week in Serre Chevalier. A new resort for Inghams this season and a little bit of an untouched, unheard-of-gem to many British tourists. This should change. It is an incredibly fantastic mountain resort.

I’m a snowboarder myself and used to be a skier so have started to get the hang of what different type of snow ardent followers look for in a mountain resort. I feel that Serre Chevalier is pretty close to being the perfect sking/snowboarding mountain, it has such varied terrain: from  long wide open pistes, tree-lined glade skiing to areas of on-piste unbashed areas so you can get used to skiing off-piste snow while still being in the skiing boundary. It really has everything!

Slopes to yourself

And the really appealing part? Because it isn’t as well known as some of its flashier French Alps counterparts some days it felt like we were on our own on the mountain, queues were close to non-existent! I almost do not want to shout about the resort in case the mountain gets busier….

As snowboarders we were blown away with some of the snow parks and something amazing called the ‘Melee Zone’, an area hidden in the trees that has never been bashed, and, when we were there, waist-deep powder. The mountain staff have used this area to create a natural terrain park, with natural kickers and fallen trees as rails and natural wood boxes. It really did feel like a playground for us boarders (skiers will love it too!)

Make sure you stop off at ‘Le Grott’ (not the nicest of names, but it means The Cave, honest!) for a during/post ski snack or drink. It is at the bottom of the ‘Mickey’ run, you can’t miss it… 12 foot high lettering ensures that. It is a real sun trap and a great place for a spot of après ski.

In closing, for something a bit different than the usual full of British French resorts such as the Three Valleys area, I highly recommend giving Serre Chevalier a go. I think you’ll be pleasantly surprised….
