If you’ve got little ones in your family and you want to start them on their first steps into skiing, we understand that you need to ensure you choose a suitable resort. Things that you may need to consider are child- friendly accommodation and whether you choose a hotel of a catered chalet, the quality of the ski school available, resort facilities and activities.  To help you choose your next family ski holiday, here is a selection of our best family ski holiday resorts.

Gressoney   best for peace and traditional village resort.
Gressoney is a perfect choice for families with small children due to its peaceful and serene ambience. Gressoney has excellent access to the slopes, and several bars and restaurants, although the après-ski scene is quieter than other resorts.
The skiing is ideal for intermediates and experts and the ski area of Monterosa offers mainly red runs, and amazing off-piste and heliskiing opportunities. Snowboarders will also love the free-riding here, and cross-country skiers are spoilt for choice too. Although not as lively as other resorts, Gressoney has a number of resort facilities which will keep the young ones happy when not on the slopes, including a sports centre, several shops, and some great restaurants.

Villars –  best for convenience
Villars is a charming chalet style resort situated close to Geneva, and links with Les Diablerets  and has a surprisingly large ski area, best suited to intermediate skiers. It is the perfect resort if you are looking for a traditional (we love the mountain train) and pretty ski resort with uncrowded slopes and understated Swiss charm.

Wengen – best for its pedestrianised centre
Wengen, which is set on a high shelf above the Lauterbrunnen valley, is a pretty, traditional, traffic free alpine village. The local scenery is some of the most beautiful in the entire Alps (the famous Eiger, Jungfrau and Monch mountains)  There are lots of long, gentle runs, ideal for leisurely intermediates and the nursery slopes are located in the in heart of village. Ideal resort for families and groups that include non-skiers as it is easy to get around on the mountain railways. The short main street is the hub. Lined with chalet-style shops and hotels, it also has the ice rink and village nursery slopes right next to it.

Vaujany – best for resort facilities
Vaujany is a small and rural village perched on the hillside of its own sector of the Alpe d'Huez skiing area. The village is served by a huge queue-free cable-car. There are plenty of pedestrian escalators accessing the various levels of the resort and the leisure centre (25 metre swimming pool, full size ice skating rink, basket ball court and bowling alley) is very impressive indeed. A new creche will shortly be added to the leisure centre making it a truly outstanding family ski holiday destination.

Valmorel - best all round family resort
Valmorel is one purpose built family ski resort which actually fulfils its ambition. Built in the 1970's to create a traffic free mountain village using only traditional Savoyarde stone and wood for the largely slope-side accommodation it is very attractive, practical and brilliant for families looking for an easy ski holiday. Valmorel recently won the Famille Plus Label which is an award that proves that the resort is a particularly good fit for families, due to its facilities, entertainment and childcare.

Obergurgl - short transfers and long ski season
Obergurgl is situated in the spectacular Oetz Valley and boasts a very long skiing season. The resort remains largely unspoilt and has no through traffic - there is a wide selection of very good hotels. The skiing starts directly from the village and most hotels offer ski in / out locations. Obergurgl is a small village so getting about is really very easy and arranging a lunchtime rendezvous of skiers and non-skiers is a pretty simple exercise which makes it a popular choice for families. The apres ski is varied and is mostly centred around the hotel bars and the resort enjoys a friendly atmosphere that draws guests back year after year.
