Live Blog From Val d'Isere

Good evening snow lovers!

With one week until Christmas, Val d'Isere is in full holiday spirit and despite lots of arrivals and a few coach-loads of students in town this week the slopes remain quiet.  It has been snowing since Saturday, about 20cm alone fell today.  Each morning the pistes have 10-20cm of fresh snow on top of a firm base, so the best skiing is to be had first thing when the snow is just gorgeous and you can get fresh tracks even on piste.  Even later on in the day when the powder is chopped up, the slopes are fun and playful and the snow hasn't been too heavy to plough through with ease.  Did you know at the top of the resort there is a snow depth of 180cm, and up to 120cm at village altitude.

Unlike last week, temperatures are to be higher this week - freezing level is just above the village, so wearing waterproof but breathable layers is a good idea.  It is a good idea to keep an eye on the wind, its been a bit gustier in the mornings, but winds have been strong enough to limit the links to and from Tignes so keep watching the info boards if your thinking of heading over!

The general forecast is for snowy blustery conditions most days this week, visibility will not be the best with some flat light conditions.  If your in town just now, make the most of Wednesday - the best day this week, scheduled to be clear and lovely.  No matter what the weather though, that snow up there is brilliant and there is so much of it!

Piste News : As mentioned the slopes are quiet - there is so much space up there, this afternoon I felt like we were the only people in the Fornet valley!  Get out and explore, you can ski the whole resort from Fornet to La Daille but take note that Santons and Piste 'L' are closed, there are a few other runs like Cognon and Trifollet not open yet either but all major routes are now open.  The Ok/Orange and La Face runs have re-opened after the World Cup events - Val d'Isere really knows how to through a party, the atmosphere around the world cup events was amazing!  Do take care on the really solid bases these slopes have (luckily there is a lot of powder on top of them now!)

Lift News : With the unpredictable weather this week, listen to Radio Val (96.2FM) or check the info boards for the higher altitude lift openings just in case of wind delays.  Guess what, the new Fontaine Froide lift broke down last week only days after opening eek, requiring 150 people to be rescued - but don't worry I rode it today and it's fixed.

Bar News : Gee where do I start?!  Quick rundown of the week - Mullit have taken up their residency playing apres daily in Doudoune Le Chalet, Rudimental is in Doudoune this evening (Monday), Saloon have live music most nights this week along with various drinks promos, Sintillate is back in Dick's on Thursday, Moriis hosting the end of the world apocalypse party on Thursday and live music most other evenings.  This is a running theme as Fall-line and Doudoune are also hosting end of the world parties - have I missed something here?  Victors is back with their trusty 2-for-1 happy hour 9-11pm, Cafe Face on Friday for Folie's Folie after the Folie Douce's first big Folie of the season! Blue Note have brought back their fab homemade Hummous and nibbles at Apres and The Fall Line have Wine & Cheese Friday.

But seriously there are so many cool places to hang out, I haven't even mentioned half of this week's social options!  Something special happens in every pub and club every night of the week! Get out there and get stuck in, luckliy nowhere is more than a 10 minute walk away in this town!  Just try not to sacrifice getting up there for those fresh tracks in the morning...so much snow!

Happy Skiing!
