Live Blog From Val d'Isere

Hello Snowlovers!

Let me introduce myself, my name is Lynn Sharp and I have been skiing for over two decades all over Europe as a recreational skier, an athlete, a coach, an instructor and always for fun.  This winter I will be blogging to keep you up to date on all the news and snow conditions from my home resort of Val d'Isere.  Currently I am in Saas-Fee, Switzerland running some Eurotest training on the glacier but as the winter fast approaches I have been keeping my finger on the pulse on what's happening over in France during the inter season.

So what's new in Val?

The Fontaine Froide chairlift has been replaced - notoriously known for being a long and freezing lift - the new faster version now finishes a little higher making access to the Olympique cable car easier too.

While the snow-canons have been blasting away on La Face De Bellevarde in preperation for the forthcoming World Cup event, it's worth noting that parts of this piste have been widened and smoothed to help ease traffic on the famous slopes.  I am looking forward to seeing exactly what landscaping has been done up there and what's different(I will let you know).

Important dates for your diary...

- 1st & 2nd December 2012 - Opening Weekend.  Snow-making is happening on the Snow Front and most lower slopes in big piles ready to spread across the pistes.  On the higher Solaise and Bellevarde slopes there is a lot of snow around and the groomers have made a base on most runs.  Above 2400m the pistes are in pretty good condition but with the currently forecast snowfall after the weekend let's hope we do get a top up.

- 8th & 9th/14th & 15th December 2012 - Criterium de la 1er Neige : Men's and Ladies World Cup Events.  The men race first with a Slalom and Giant Slalom on La Face De Bellevarde (the stands have already started going up).  The ladies race Downhill and Super-G on the OK Piste the following weekend.  The world's best racers come to town and the atmosphere is amazing!

Down in the village more seasonaires arrive everyday preparing for the end of the month when the season kicks off.  To keep them occupied Le Petit Danois and Pacific bars have already held their opening parties.  Dick's Tea Bar opens on the 29th, Moris Pub opens on the 30th and Doudoune is hosting a pre-opening party tonight (21st).  Local band Mullit are also back in town rehearsing new songs to play on the new extended terrace in Le Chalet and the Blue note is open everyday now from 3pm.  There is one heck of a party scene in Val, just wait until we're in full swing!

So from Switzerland I leave you with the first of many updates.  As the nights gets longer and the air gets colder, let's all pray to the snow gods that we get another heck of a winter this season.

Happy Skiing!
