The Olympic gold medalist Kelly Clarke finished first in the snowboard superpipe qualifiers throwing an inverted 720, but the 13 year old Chloe Kim had an impressive showing qualifying second after two runs.
Jamie Anderson, last year's snowboard slopestyle winner, finished first in qualifying. The real upset was Australia's Torah Bright not making the finals after she knuckled a jump on her second run. Torah will be back on Saturday to compete in the superpipe finals.
Maggie Volsin is another young girl who had a stunning performance, at 14 years old she placed first in the ski slopestyle qualifiers. Washington native Angeli VanLaanen placed first in the ski superpipe qualifying run.
