A tough morning in Le Tour- minus Portaski!

A few days later I arranged to meet a ‘leader’ from the Ski Club of Great Britain for an off piste guided day, as they were now out here in Argentiere for three weeks or so. I woke up that morning and the weather was bleak. It had finally snowed heavily overnight and the road to Grands Montets was pretty icy and there was very little visibility. When I eventually got there the lifts were closed and not looking like opening for a few hours, so the group decide to jump on the bus to Le Tour and see what we could do there. Only the bus stopped about ten minutes away from the resort as it was locked by people putting on their snow chains. We all had to get out and walk. Never has there been a time I’d more wished I’d had my Portasi on me. Carrying my skis uncomfortably on my shoulder and plodding up the road in my ski boots for what felt more like 20 minutes – I really wished I’d stayed in bed that morning!  After one pretty hairy run down I decided to quit and retreated to a café next to the car park. The buses were still not running so I settled in for lunch and waited, eventually getting on a bus back to Grands Montets and my car about an hour later.

A better day was had a few days later when an excuse came up to head to Verbier. I’d noticed there was an English radio station based there and decided to send them my CV on the of chance they’d have some work ( I am also a broadcast journalist) and I had an email back from a “Conor Lennon.” It took me a few days to click, but the name went round in my head ‘Conor Lennon, Conor Lennon, ‘ Yes! I used to work with him at a radio station in Kent! What a small world. He invited me over to have a look at the studios and chat about what work there may be. Naturally I used that as an excuse to use the vouchers that came with my Mont Blanc Unlimited pass to ski the day in Verbier. And what a difference to Chamonix. It’s wide open, with what seemed like an endless amount of sweeping pistes and just goes on and on. I’ll definitely be back here to explore some more very soon. I was invited to see the ‘apres ski’ show go out live from the “TBar” next Friday – but unfortunately that day the snow came down thick and fast and I didn’t fancy attempting the gnarly drive there in my little car. But I’ll be back soon, for sure- it would be great to have a little radio work on the side in the future!
